Where no alternative means are possible, financial contributions won't be turned away at the door like common salespeople. I'm not that cold.
What is this? It may sound jazzy, but I doubt if it would fit a definition of jazz. It is improvisation in part, but there is more of chance music about it.
So, what did I do? About the aleatorical aspect of this, I choose which of the clavinova's voices I was going to use and I decided that each voice would have between five and ten minutes in which to perform. I also selected which global FX were being used at any one time.
With regards to the improvisational aspect, I turned the tuner on the radio. I adjusted the signal volume. All the notes (and beats) you hear are played either by the volume or the pitch of the radio. I'm still not sure which it is. I applied sustain pedal on a whim, and changed the FX.
About the pieces. At the end of recording, what I had in each instance was one long audio file about 40 minutes in length. I cut that recording, separating out each voice, putting them onto a different track and mixing them as if there were a group playing. I arranged the tracks. Some of them have been cut into parts and I have made spaces between them or looked for spaces to put them in.
The first piece has everything in the order it was recorded. I tried the same for the second track, but I ended up with two parts that stuck out over the end of the piece. These two parts were recycled - as 'overdubs' - they ended up in other places.
In the end, I used everything I had recorded.
I did a bit of production on the pieces; volume, pan, a little EQ on the bass, and on the 'vocal' (where you can hear someone talking on the radio).
Needless to say, any mistakes must be my own. The radio is not to blame. There are no wrong notes, but I had to make some choices about timings, and they may not be right.
I'm still learning how to do it right. That's if there is a right way. For a while yet, I'll be entertaining the possibility that there is.
Hope you enjoy.
